Match Report
Scotch College 1sts vs  Aquinas College
On: Saturday, 04 May 2019
Venue: Away

With 3 students, Lucas Ferri, Xavier, Graham and Lewis Miller, making their Rayhouse debuts, the boys were excited to get the season going with a big fixture against an unpredictable Aquinas side. With a different game structure consisting of four quarters instead of two halves the team was unsure how this would impact our usual game plan. The first quarter started with some inconsistent play of hockey with no team really taking control of the game. The Scotch team was desperate to get an early lead in the game and some good midfield play allowed Scotch the break we needed with a short corner nearing the end of the first quarter. Without very much short corner practice we decided to give Will Charmers a drag flick which resulted in the first goal of the Scotch Hockey 2019 season. After a quick break the second quarter resulted in the Scotch team playing a much better game of hockey with the ball being played within the Aquinas half most of the quarter. This better style of hockey allowed for a lot of opportunities into the Aquinas D but we couldn’t’ seem to convert any goals due to a few excellent saves from the Aquinas keeper. Within the third quarter Scotch maintained possession most of quarter but with no goals scored for the Scotch team and a quick break away for Aquinas, this quickly levelled the scores going into the fourth quarter. The final quarter saw both teams rise the intensity of the game however, with Scotch’s determination to win out first game of the season James Mardardy had a brilliant play leading to a goal that was disallowed. This didn’t’ stop grit of the team and another good midfield play led to a well-deserved short corner and a brilliant flick from Will Chalmers had Scotch 2-1 ahead finishing off the game.
