Match Report
Scotch College 10/11s vs  Aquinas College
On: Saturday, 04 May 2019
Venue: Away

The Scotch Year 10A team lost a close contest to Aquinas at McMahon Oval on Saturday. In lovely conditions for rugby Scotch started strongly retaining the ball well and using good structure early on. Luka Kalugin in his first game of rugby showed real promise carrying the ball up strongly and aggressively. He was ably assisted by another player having his first rugby game, Taye Barlow. Taye tackled magnificently and also ran the ball up field with purpose. Concerted pressure from Scotch told after a good back line move involving Josh Eygelaar and Jacob Bennet sent Tom Dawson marauding down field. An illegal tackle as Tom bore down on the try line resulted in a penalty. From the resultant scrum Josh carried the ball to the line and found a gap to open the scoring. Aqiunas had strong runners at fly half and centre and they tested the Scotch defence all day. They used the pick and drive on numerous occasions with Harry Frodsham in particular making numerous tackles around the ruck to stifle their forward momentum. They pressured late on in the half to score under the posts and convert as Aquinas led 7 – 5 at the break.

The home team then piled on the pressure early on in the second half. They continued their pick and drive game plan and camped in the Scotch half for 15 minutes. The men in maroon held firm with Harry Frodsham and Oliver Barrett getting through a mountain of defensive work. The pressure told however and Aquinas scored out wide when their big centre found a hole in the defensive line. Scotch responded in determined fashion and with Simon Arnott becoming prominent they began to dominate the forward battle. Harry Miller worked tirelessly all day to link play well and after good lead up work Xavier Dry scooted over in the corner with 3 minutes to go. Remi Brossard just missed the conversion from the touchline and with the game in the balance Aquinas kicked off once again. The ball was worked wide from the kick off with Jacob Bennet creating space for Remi to beat a few players and recycle the ball, the forwards carried it up and with the clock ticking passed the end of the game a handling error as Scotch pressed for the winner saw the final whistle sound on an even well contested game.
